I am saving for a house, so I want to unload my 2013 Escape. Did all the math, and it makes way more sense to sell it then to keep it. I live in Seattle, if that helps change any answers.
My question: Where should I post it? Any advice on selling an almost new car? Autotrader? Cars.com?
I've never had to sell something for almost $30K. I've sold my old cars before, but usually using Craigslist because they were worth nothing.
The nearest CarMax is 200 miles away. I was going to use that as a escape route (escape! get it? ...I'll see myself out...) if I couldn't sell it over the summer.
Thanks in advance Oppo!

I'd still start with craigslist. It's free and people go looking for all kinds of stuff on there. If you don't get serious about after a few weeks then I'd maybe consider paying for a listing on AutoTrader or Cars.com.

Can I come with you to CarMax? I've always wanted to go...
(kidding, sort of...)

Assuming you ask close to $30k for a used Escape (are they worth that much? Damn!), realize that people perusing Craigslist for a used SUV probably aren't going to have that much money laying around for a cash transaction. You'll need a buyer that can finance the purchase. I'd take it to CarMax and see what they'll offer you.

I have a few friends that work at CarMax in CA. From all of Doug's posts I kind of want to check it out too...

There will be one in Beaverton soon, which is closer than Spokane.

See if you have any consignment dealers nearby. They're usually hungry for late model low mileage cars.

Almost 30k? May want to readjust that if the MSRP is only 22 for a new '13 Escape.

That's for the base model. I have the Titanium with all the options. MSRP was $37K. I've been seeing them going online for 28-31 with similar options and miles.

Good thinking! I'll look into that.

Holy jesus. TIL a loaded Escape costs more than a BMW 335i.

Only go to CarMax if you want to know what the WORST case trade in figure would be. I took my wife's 2009 Expedition EL to my local one to gauge what it would be worth if I got lowballed on a trade in.
They offered $16K on a car that retails typically for $25K. They had a similar one in their network (same year, same spec, slightly higher miles) for $27K. My wife's car was in good condition and needed minimal work to retail.
In the end I traded it in at a Honda dealer for $18,800. And I had already negotiated $3,000 under invoice for the Odyssey we traded it for, so they didn't give us a deal for an over inflated new car.
Of course, YMMV...

Good to know. I figure I would get close to the "trade in Value" from kbb and the like. Certainly lower than the private party sale price. Good to know that they all play the same game though. I was assuming CarMax was a little more upfront with their pricing, but hey, everyone needs to make a buck right?
